Packing

How to Pack Like a Pro: A Room-by-Room Packing Guide

Packing is where most moves are won or lost. Done well, the truck loads quickly and nothing breaks. Done in a rush, you arrive with crushed boxes and no idea what is in them. Here is how a professional crew works through a home, room by room, so you can do the same.

Before you start: the rules that apply everywhere

  • Heavy items in small boxes, light items in large boxes, so nothing gets too heavy to lift safely
  • Fill every gap with paper or soft goods so contents do not shift in transit
  • Tape the bottom of every box across the seam, then once more for weight
  • Label the side of each box with the destination room and a short contents note

Kitchen

The kitchen is the most time-consuming room, so give it the most care. Wrap each plate individually and stack them on edge, vertically, like records in a crate, which is far stronger than stacking them flat. Use dish-pack boxes or plenty of cushioning for glasses and stemware. Nest pots, pad the gaps, and tape lids separately. Keep a small box of daily essentials, like a few plates, mugs, and utensils, packed last and opened first.

Bedrooms

Bedrooms pack fast. Clothes on hangers go straight into wardrobe boxes so they stay clean and ready to hang. Fold the rest into suitcases and dresser drawers, which can often travel as they are if the dresser is sturdy. Use towels, linens, and blankets as padding for fragile items elsewhere in the house, which saves on bubble wrap and on boxes.

Living room

Wrap the television in a blanket and, if you still have it, the original box. Photograph the back of your electronics before unplugging so reconnecting is simple. Bag and label cords and remotes together. Books go in small boxes only, since they get heavy fast. Wrap framed art and mirrors in paper, then move them in flat between sturdy items.

Bathroom

Toss anything expired or nearly empty. Seal liquids in a zip bag before boxing them so a leak does not ruin everything else. Keep one bag of true daily essentials, like toothbrush, soap, and medications, with your first-night box rather than the bathroom box.

Garage, attic, and basement

These rooms hold the awkward stuff. Coil hoses and cords, drain anything with fuel, and remember that movers cannot transport propane, gasoline, or other hazardous materials, so plan to handle those yourself. Pad tools, and box small loose hardware so it does not scatter. These are great rooms to pack first since you rarely need them in the final days.
