The Best Time to Move in Indiana

A Soft Touch Moving truck on an Indiana road on a clear day

When you move changes both what it costs and how smoothly it goes. Movers, like flights and hotels, have busy and quiet windows, and the quiet ones are cheaper and easier to book. Here is how the calendar works in central and southern Indiana.

Season: fall and winter are the quiet, cheaper windows

Summer is peak moving season nationwide, roughly half of all moves happen between May and September, so demand and prices are highest then. If you have flexibility, the stretch from late September through April is quieter, easier to book, and often easier on the budget. Winter moves in Indiana mean watching the weather, but a clear cold day is a perfectly good moving day.

Month and day: avoid the end of the month and weekends

Leases and closings cluster at the end of the month, so the first and last few days fill up first. Weekends book before weekdays for the same reason. If you can move mid-month and mid-week, you will have more dates to choose from and a less rushed crew.

The Bloomington exception: the IU calendar

Bloomington runs on the Indiana University calendar. Move-in in August and move-out in May are the two busiest weeks of the year here, with tight parking near campus and dates that book out early. If your move is tied to the school year, reserve well ahead. If it is not, moving around those weeks is smoother.

  • Cheapest and easiest: late September through April, mid-month, mid-week.
  • Busiest and priciest: May through September, end of month, weekends.
  • Bloomington: avoid the IU August move-in and May move-out weeks unless your move is tied to them.
  • Whenever you move, booking earlier gets you the date you want.

Winter moving in Indiana: cheaper, just watch the forecast

Plenty of people rule out winter, and that is exactly why it is the easiest season to book. Indiana winters are cold but the roads are usually clear, and a dry, cold day is a perfectly good moving day. We keep an eye on the forecast, pad and wrap everything the same as always, and lay down floor protection so melting snow and salt never reach your floors. The only days we plan around are active ice or heavy snow, and even then it is usually a short reschedule rather than a cancellation. If saving money matters more than the calendar, a January or February move is hard to beat.

Whatever the season, book early

The single biggest thing in your control is how far ahead you book. Movers fill their calendars from the popular dates outward, so the earlier you lock your date, the more likely you get the one you want, and the less rushed the crew is on the day. For a normal local move, two to four weeks of notice is plenty. For a summer move, a month-end date, a weekend, or anything tied to the Indiana University calendar in Bloomington, give it four to six weeks. Even if your dates are not final, a quick call to check availability costs nothing and saves you scrambling later.

What is the cheapest time to move in Indiana?
Generally the off-peak window of late fall through early spring, mid-month and mid-week. Demand is lower than the summer peak, so dates are easier to get and pricing is friendlier. A clear winter day is a fine moving day.
When should I book if I have to move in summer?
As early as you can, ideally four to six weeks out. Summer, the end of the month, and weekends are the busiest windows, so the best dates go first. Call 317-284-1900 to lock your date in.
