Moving Tips
Moving can be overwhelming unless you are organized and have a plan. Here are some helpful tips to make the process go much smoother.
One Month Before
- Take inventory of your possessions. Decide what to move and what to give away or sell.
- Make a room-by-room plan for where items will go in your new location.
- Create a moving file with all receipts (many expenses are tax deductible).
- Check if your employer covers any moving costs.
- Get moving estimates and select your mover.
- If moving long distance, book flights, hotels, and car rentals.
- Secure packing supplies and start packing non-daily items.
- Submit change of address to the Post Office, banks, credit cards, and subscriptions.

Two Weeks Before
- Contact utility providers (telephone, gas/electric, water, cable, internet).
- Use up perishable food items to avoid waste.
One Week Before
- Call your mover to confirm all arrangements.
- Set aside essentials you’ll need immediately (clothes, toiletries, linens, microwave, cleaning items).
- Ensure all boxes are secure and labeled if you’re packing yourself.
- Keep jewelry and valuables separate for self-transport.
- If movers are packing, organize items in advance.
- Make arrangements for pets.
- Plan how to pay your mover (cash, money order, check, or employer billing).

One Day Before
- Defrost and dry refrigerators/freezers.
- Keep your moving file, directions/map, and keys ready.
Moving Day
If possible, be available throughout the entire move to answer any questions the movers may have.
